As I was leaving Arizona to move to a remote village in Alaska, I promised several people I would keep a blog to share my experiences. I'm sad to admit that I failed miserably at that task. Hopefully I will do better documenting my experiences this year. I loved my time in Kipnuk. Here's at least a few pictures of my year in this little village..
Kipnuk is a Yup'ik Eskimo village with a population of 600. It is on the Bering Sea about 400 miles west of Anchorage. It is off the road system. The only way in is by a small plane from Bethel.
Visiting Chase for his birthday.. Chase, Violet, and Dolly
Emira, Miranda, Violet, Mary, and George
Inez and Patricia cutting up walrus meat.
Emily trying a piece of walrus meat. I think it's better raw than cooked.
A walrus skin and a seal skin on the patio drying. They use every part of the animal for food or clothing.
At Miranda's house.. The shed with some fish drying in the background.
This is teacher housing. I lived in the bottom floor of the East Building. There were some very large snow drifts which made perfect sledding hills.
The basketball court. The kids played here constantly in all kinds of weather.
